Very large owl with prominent ear tufts and vivid orange eyes. buff-brown heavily marked with black, greyish facial diskand white throat. Under-parts paler with black streaks, and fine brown barring on belly.

Primarily rocky landscapes from sea-level to above timberline. Also open forest. Avoids dense and extensive forests.

Continental Eurasia. Status - Not globally threatened.
