Tiny owl with small head and no ear tufts. Dusky facial disk with short white "eyebrows" and yellow eyes. Upper-parts dark brown spotted with white buff, under-parts mostly white with barred with dark brown.

Boreal forest particularly coniferous.

Northern and Central Europe, Eastern Siberia, Northern China. Status - Not globally threatened, and locally relatively common.
