Medium sized owl with no ear tufts, rufous-brown facial disk and dark eyes. Rusty brown uppers barred with pale buff, whitish underneath with coarse brown barring.

Primary and secondary forest often with dense undergrowth.

East Brazil to East & South Paraguay and North east Argentina. Status - Not globally threatened.
