DESCRIPTION

Small owl with squat appearance. Deep grey-brown above, heavily mottled with white, and white or buff below boldly streaked with brown. Indistinct facial disk and yellow eyes.

HABITAT

Open country, often farmland, with hedges, ruins, hayricks or other suitable nesting and hiding places. Also found in broken country where rocks fulfil the same function.

DISTRIBUTION

Eurasia from Iberia, Denmark to Asia Minor and China.
